Microneedling (dermarolling) benefits and routine for acne scars

If you're struggling with acne scars, fine lines, or uneven skin tone, microneedling (dermarolling) could help. It's a non-invasive way to boost collagen production and improve skin’s appearance.

Microneedling involves using tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the skin, stimulating collagen production. Collagen is the main protein in your skin, therefore crucial for maintaining plump, elastic, and smooth skin. After year 25, natural collagen in the skin starts declining, and supporting it with lifestyle is imperative.

Microneedling can be performed in a certified clinic or at home. When done at home, utmost care and safety need to be considered. It involves hygiene, correct needle size, and safe products like creams and serums.

Here's a breakdown of my own microneedling protocol that effectively reduced my acne scars and small wrinkles around the eyes.

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling triggers your body's natural wound-healing process, boosting collagen production. It's similar to how muscles grow through resistance training; controlled skin damage leads to restoring tissue and, consequently, improved skin structure, elasticity, and skin health.

My micro needling routine

  1. Start Small: For better serum absorption, begin with 0.25 mm needles. Use them for a month, 2 times a week.
  2. Increase Gradually: For deeper collagen stimulation, move to 0.5 mm needles. Use once a week for three months.
  3. Focus on Problem Areas: Use 0.75 mm needles for deep scars every three weeks. You don't have to use 0.75mm if you don't have scars; 0.5 mm may also be suitable.

If you go beyond 0.5 mm, it's crucial to avoid microneedling thin or damaged skin. You must avoid the skin around your eyes very carefully. There are also more risks and longer downtime. That's why I recommend sticking with the 0.5mm in case you absolutely must move forward. Before moving to longer needles, consult a qualified healthcare provider in dermatology.

Essential Tips

  • Hygiene is Key: Always clean and disinfect your face and the dermaroller. I use 70 % isopropyl alcohol or liquid oxygen.
  • Use Quality Tools: Choose medical-grade rollers with real needles. I use Gim Amber dermaroller (use code INKA for a discount)
  • Protect Your Skin: Use high-quality SPF to prevent sun damage. I use La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid.
  • Support with Supplements: Incorporate multi-form collagen supplements and topical collagen serums. I use IncaCao multicollagen (use code INKA for a discount)
  • Red Light Therapy: Use to boost collagen and improve skin healing.

Conclusion

Microneedling is a sustainable, effective, and gentle way to improve skin health. Unlike lasers, it has minimal downtime and is simple to incorporate into your routine. Remember to maintain good hygiene, use quality tools, and support your skin with proper nutrition and skincare products.
